Manor Farm, Gloucestershire
A contemporary corrugated metal extension to a 19th Century stone farmers cottage in Gloucestershire, designed to reflect the agricultural character of traditional buildings in the Cotswolds.
The extension adds a much more needed space to the previous existing kitchen and dining area as well as wide views to the adjacent paddock. Being able to see the paddock was a priority to the owners but it was also a design challenge as the goal was to design a contemporary extension with views without spoiling the classic farmers cottage's appearance.
We took inspiration from agricultural buildings in the surrounding farms. When viewed from a distance, the dark grey colour makes the original cottage stand out while the extension still has its own presence.
Internally, the extension has a mezzanine floor over a shower room, which provides another space that works as a study/guest bedroom.
